Friday thoughts.

Posted in Fun Stuff, Sometimes Life is Annoying, Stuff about me. on February 18, 2011 by Nutsy Fagan

Forefront in my mind:  American Idol.  Best.  Season.  Ever.  I will be writing about this a lot.  I know that none of my loyal fans really watch.  But maybe you’ll give it a try this season.  I am JLo’s newest, biggest fan.  I love her!  And then there’s Creepy Uncle Steve, as my new blog friend Dave calls him.  He’s incredibly entertaining.  These two folks teamed with Randy Jackson?  It’s like watching a whole new show.  It’s fantastic.

Secondly, nagging in my mind: I did one of the worst things a mom/neighbor can do.  I was supposed to bring the neighbor’s child home from dance class last night and …….*horror*…..yes, I forgot her.  My stomach hurts just writing about it.  I walk in the door and Larry goes, “Babs, did you forget something?????”  Breath is sucked from my body, face is burning red and I having the most incredible yearning ever to turn back the clock, stand in the hallway and say, “come on girlSSSSS, let’s go!”.  This is just about the worst icky.  Really.  If you’ve ever done it, you understand.  I know it will pass, but not soon enough.  The parents were great about it.  Their daughter wasn’t that upset….OMG.  Nuff said.

So, it’s Friday.  Kids are off to school for the last day before a week off.  Nice.  I do like having them home.  I’ve made more plans than usual for upcoming week.  Usually I just let things happen.  But I feel itchy about this week – I’ve made plans for 5 of the 9 days off.  We’re having cousins sleep over.  We’ll spend a day in the city going to FAO Schwartz and then either skating in Bryant Park or a visit to Madam Tussaud’s.  Laurence is having some friends sleepover one night, Gracie will have a few friends another.  We’ll go skating in Deer Park at some point.  Other than that, we’ll just relax.  We’re ready.

The kids are thinking about going to a sleep away camp for a week this summer.  I know for a fact that it will be good for them.  I went two summers in a row for a month each time.  It was a tremendous experience.  Then, of course, there’s the upside for me.  A week without kids?  Yee ha.  Yeah, if that puts me in the rotten mommy category, I’m okay with that!!

I’m making Taco Soup for dinner.  Kids are super excited because I bought their favorite – Tostitos Hint of Lime Chips to go with.  Finn is going to the doggie spa to get all dolled up.  I’m going to try and squeeze in a cheap pedicure as my tootsie’s are something in need of attention.  Sleeping LATE tomorrow!  A fire and chillaxin’.  Laurence is having some friends for a Harry Potter movie night.  Pizza is on the menu, which means no cooking for me!

Time to roll.  Have a great day and enjoy the weekend.  Later.

Guilt!

I’m missing the PTA meeting this morning!!! Yes!  It’s true!  Former President skips PTA meeting!  I haven’t missed one in about 4 years.  The Earth won’t stop turning and life as we know it will continue.  It’s just hard to step out of a habit you’ve been in for a long, long time.  Why am I not going?  I forgot it was today!  Ha ha ha.  My mother needs me to run an errand and I’m just….well….tired.  So, I’m not going!  I went to Founders Day on Tuesday.  It’s a celebration where we honor teachers, parents and citizens with lifetime PTA membership awards for all they’ve done.  I really enjoy this night.  The speeches are warm, funny and endearing.  It’s nice to see folks who work so hard get some recognition.  It’s usually a surprise and we have their families waiting in the wings to come out as someone presents the award.  I presented the award for our school.  It went to my friend, Ann F.  She’s just the greatest.   Salt of the Earth, has known more than her share of heartache and never, ever complains.  Amazing faith, strength and courage.  She fights every single day.  She runs half of our committees – all the hardest and most thankless jobs – blood drive, membership, Council Delegate, Special Ed rep….God, she’s unbelievable.  Somehow she always manages to stay in the background.  She is SO NOT the mommy who sweeps in all dressed up and spackled for her grand appearance to “help”.  Ann is already there and has pretty much everything done.  She’s also an excellent cocktailer.  I love her and it was my pleasure to speak about her and present her with the award.

More on guilt:  I like Facebook.  I do.  I used to hate it, but have found a happy groove.  Here’s the rub:  I hate asking someone to be my friend and I hate when certain people want to be my friend.  Case in point:  A woman who lives nearby, Club member, kid in same school……and yet, we have NOTHING in common.  We have never hung out or had any sort of decent conversation.  Ever.  I don’t like her.  I find her super annoying.  She’s one of those All About Me! people…so icky.  She friends me!  What is she thinking?  Really?  REALLY?  Aw…..come on.  I had weeded through my friend list a while back and I’ve kind of slipped again….It’s time to toughen up again.  Also, I never, ever want to be one of those people with 396 friends…..COME ON!!!

On a whole new topic, I went to the Dermotologist yesterday and had three things cut off my bod yesterday.  She also burned some flaky skin on my nose.  I’m starting to feel like salad.  I’ve been sliced, diced and tossed six ways to Sunday.   I’m healing and doing really well after the surgery.  I’m a tiny bit sore and the only real problem is that by 8pm I really, really, really just want to lay down in my bed.  Otherwise, I’m pretty good!  Pathology all came back normal, so I never need to worry about that part of me again!  Also, miraculously, I have had no real signs of menopause yet.  Did I just ruin it by writing that down??????  No sweating, no craziness…..It’s been over a week.  I suppose that could all still come, but seriously, I would have expected to have seen some signs by now.  Oh well, let’s just go with it, shall we?  For my children’s sake, I hope present state remains.

LOVING American Idol this season.  Found a new blog, Clouds in My Coffee, that I love.  I’ve added him to my blogroll.  Check it out if you can.  He’s funny.  His latest post is about Idol and he is funny and insightful.  He also reviewed The King’s Speech and I was so glad he did.  My daughter wants to see this and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why it was rated R.  Dave solved this.  Colin Firth drops the F Bomb a few times.  Sadly, my daughter has heard this more than a few times from my and my husbands mouth, so…..  it’s on.  I’ll take her.  I want to see it as well.

Hmmm.  Anything else new?  Yes.  I could rag about my mother, but this Catholic girl is feeling enough guilt today just for missing the PTA meeting.  Have a great day!!! 🙂

Happy Valentines to all.

I don’t care if it’s a Hallmark holiday.  I like it.  A little extra romance or verbal smooch never hurt anyone!!!!  So go home and tell your honey you love and appreciate them.  Smile at them.  Give them a teeny little kiss.  Enjoy the day.  Here are Larry and I on our wedding day as the eye of Hurricane Bertha passed overhead.  It gave us a 20 minute window to get outside and snap some photos. Oh, my goodness.  We were so young and beautiful.

It’s getting better all the time.

Oh yes, it is amazing what a difference a day can make.  I slept well – a result of being able to turn over without feeling like I was going to come apart.  Wonderful.  I can walk standing straight up today!  Yay!  I look better and all the swelling and poof is on its way out.  All really, really good.  I managed to do some laundry.  I took a shower AND blew my hair!  I look human!  It’s sunny and it’s Friday.  Aunt Susie is taking the kiddies after school and they will sleep over should they please, which I’m pretty sure they will.   Larry will hopefully be home at a decent hour.  My oldest friend in the world is coming for a visit and we’re going to have some take out sushi for dinner.  Life is good.

Today would be near perfect if my sister called and told me her CT scan was clear.  Say a prayer for her if you pray.  Thanks.  Enjoy this sunny day and the coming weekend.  Smell the coffee and the flowers.  Life is so good.

Inception:  Wha?  Hated it.  Don’t bother.

Secretariat:  Loved it.  There was one big flaw – there are really two stories here.  The first is Penny’s love of her farm, horses, trainers and Secretariat himself.  The second is Penny and her family which gets touched on but not explored or really explained.  The first story is so great that it overcomes the second.  Plus, Secretariat was such an amazing animal and his achievements were incredible.  Unsurpassed, I believe.  Diane Lane is wonderful in anything she does.  John Malkovich is wonderful as well.  I recommend it.

Not sure what I’ll watch today – I want to catch up on Oscar nominees but am not much in the mood for depressing stuff.  So Winter’s Bone may be off the shelf.  I might go for light fare like Easy A.

Still very sore, but better than yesterday, so small steps.  I’m able to roll over in bed a lot more easily which helps with sleeping.  On that note, I’m headed back up to bed.  Thanks for all your good wishes.   They make me happy and feel good.

Gettin’ ready.

Laundry is in process of completion.  I had a good breakfast before being told I was on a clear liquid diet for the rest of the day!  Thank God I ate that meal!!  Dusting is done.  I went for a long walk in the sunshine with my puppy, my friend and her puppy!  I’ve arranged pick ups, drops offs, etc. for the kids.  Now I need to clean the bathrooms and vacuum.  Everything will be nice and neat and tidy for the next few days.  Friends are bringing dinner tomorrow night and the next night and I have enough in the freezer for quite a few nights after.  Just waiting for my scheduled time.  I had an info call from a nurse this morning who said it was probably around 10:30 – 11:00am.  That would be great for me.  We would probably be home in time for supper with the kids.  But it is what is is and I’ll take whatever time I get.  I do hope it’s early – today is fine for fasting.  No problem.  But by 11:00am tomorrow, I’ll be getting cranky.  And thirsty.  Oh well.  Life goes on, right?

Okay.  Off to vacuum.  Keep me in your good thoughts and I’ll be back when I can.  😉

My love’s birthday!

Happy Birthday honey!!!

We started the day by bringing coffee, cards and presents (lots of candy – he IS the candy man!) in bed.  This was followed by allowing Dad some time to chill in bed and watch a movie.  Then Dad went and got a haircut.  He came home to Coronation Chicken for lunch – one of his favorites and a surprise!  Now he’s off to see The Green Hornet with Laurence, while Gracie and I make his birthday cakes.  Cakes?  Yes, cakes!  The first is a cake I make from scratch that is just out of this world.  It’s called Celebration Cake.  I got it out of a BHG magazine years ago and have never seen it or been able to find it on the Internet since.  So I am very, very glad I wrote it down in my Recipe Book!  It came with a recipe for Vanilla Buttercream Frosting – sooooo easy and soooo delicious.  Recipes for both below.  But since my darling Larry is not a cake fan, Gracie is making her ice cream cake for him.  Mmmmmmm…..he’ll love that.  She lines a square cake pan with Saran Wrap.  Then she lays Oreo’s to cover the bottom.  They fit perfectly.  On top of this goes vanilla fudge ice cream that has been softened.  The final layer is crushed Oreo’s.  Then you freeze it.  It’s good with whipped cream and/or chocolate sauce. Why two cakes?  I, and my inlaws, like cake.  I also need to practice making a fancy cake for my niece’s bridal shower this summer.  While fondant is just gorgeous, I hate eating it and it pisses me off when it’s on a cake.  Thus, I am covering my cake with buttercream.  It doesn’t need to be fondant-perfect, but it needs to look pretty good and smooth.  Thus the need for practice, practice, practice.  Plus, I just like to make cakes.  It’s FUN!!!  I just put together the three layers of cake and crumb-coated them.  They’re in the fridge firming up.  Photos of finished product to follow!  Here’s the cake and frosting recipes:

Celebration Cake

2 1/2 sticks of softened butter

2 cups of sugar

1 tbsp. vanilla

4 tsps. baking powder

1/2 each baking soda and salt

4 eggs (room temp)

3 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Mix first five ingredients in a big bowl on medium speed for 3 minutes.  Lower speed and add one egg at a time.  Add in half of the flour and all the buttermilk and mix.  Then add the remaining flour.  Pour into three greased and parchment lined cake pans.  Bake for 30 – 35 minutes in a 350 oven.

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

4 sticks of softened butter

16 oz. of Marshmallow Fluff

2 cups of confectioners sugar

2 tbsp. vanilla

Mix until fluffy.

We’re headed out to dinner tonight and then will bring the birthday cakes to Larry’s folk’s house for dessert.  His sister is visiting too, so it will be nice.  I must remember candles!!!

In other news, I have had a rough couple of weeks.  I had a health scare that was resolved, my mother is a constant source of stress and aggravation (if I’m being honest), my sister is suffering, my surgery is Tuesday, I have a CCK HIDEA scan next week and I wish that it were different.  I’m STRESSED.  But today is a good day.  Larry is here and healthy.  While it may not always be apparent, I adore you Larry.  Our kids are great and we have a great day in store.  So there is much to be thankful for.  But I’m still having a big, fat cocktail tonight.  Or six.
